This black-bound notebook features a cropped reproduction of Adolf Hitler's 1910 self-portrait, depicting him seated alone on a stone bridge, gazing into an empty reflection in the water below that somehow almost looks back. He is a man seated on the bridge of fate, nearly erased from view. Some bridges are built to cross. Others to disappear on.
Art historians dismiss it as amateur. The rest of us call it a window and perhaps even a mirror. I know that I always write best when I imagine he’s watching from the bridge.
